Spain – Boost in Summer jobs

25 June 2019

The Adecco Group Spain forecasts this year's summer campaign will create 1.4 million jobs throughout Spain, an increase of 7.3% compared to the previous year.

The tourism and hospitality sector will be where the bulk of the contracts will be signed. Other sectors such as airport, services, transport and logistics, distribution and retail and commercial and contact centres, will see hiring increase. The Adecco Group did not provide additional data on the types of contracts that will be signed.

The five Autonomous Communities that will generate the most jobs during the summer campaign are Catalonia (285,040 new contracts), the Community of Madrid (223,830), the Valencian Community (152,800). the Region of Murcia (152,300) and Andalusia (133,310).

Galicia will see the biggest jump in jobs created with an increase of 14% compared to last year. This is followed by Andalusia, which will generate 12% more jobs than last year.

Separately this week, figures from Randstad Spain showed that during July and August there will be 204,510 new jobs generated during the summer sales campaign in Spain. E-commerce will be one of the main drivers of the hiring increase.

20minutos.es reports that Randstad and Adecco’s hiring figures can be interpreted as a sign of the good momentum of the Spanish labour market in terms of job creation, but also of its chronic problem of excessive temporality and seasonality.

"Temporary hiring has been increasing in recent years, but that is nothing more than the effect of all the jobs that were destroyed by the crisis, a structural employment that has not been restored," says Cristina Estévez, head of Commerce and Large Warehouses of UGT (General Union of Workers).
