Spain – Amazon lays off more than 100 temporary workers who went on strike over working conditions (Telesur)

19 April 2018

Amazon announced that it has decided not to renew the contract of over 100 temporary workers at a logisitics center in Madrid, reports Telesur. Unions in Spain, particularly CTG, have criticised the dismissal of the temporary workers and have accused the company of victimising its workers for going on strike in March and protesting over new conditions that they say reduce their wages and benefits. Amazon has said the layoffs were due to a drop in demand. The company stated that they hire temporary workers to handle high demand seasons, and then turn their contracts into permanent ones if possible. “Due to this seasonal nature, it's not possible to turn all this kind of contract into indefinite ones,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “Since the beginning of our operations in Spain, we have turned hundreds of temporal contracts into permanent ones.”
