Spain - 33% of young employees are over-qualified due to their lack of flexibility

16 July 2009

A new research report on “Over-qualification and Labour FlexibilityVbCrLf carried out by Spanish bank Bancaja in collaboration with The Valencia Institute for Economic Research (Ivie) reveals that 33% of young Spanish workers are not willing to be flexible in terms of contracts, commitment, work schedules and geography.

The report highlights that 70% of over-qualified young people continue in this situation in the next job and only 30% move on to find employment which matches their qualifications. Only 4% are willing to accept a geographical move in order to get a more appropriate job.

The report estimates that on average inflexible young workers are happy to earn €140 per month less in order to work fixed hours, €138 less to have an indefinite contract and €136 less in order not to have to move away from their home town.

The authors, Professor Jose Maria Pero and Professor Jose Garcia-Montalvo conclude that the inflexibility of young people reduces the competitiveness of Spain and lowers the return of the government’s investment in education by 0.8% for each year of training/education.
