Portugal – Temporary work turnover up 6.1% in 2018

13 February 2019

The turnover of Portuguese temporary employment companies amounted to €1.35 billion in 2018, a year-on-year growth of 6.1%, according to data from Informa D&B.

The data looked at 220 temporary work companies in Portugal. It stated that last year's gains in the temporary work business came "in a favourable macroeconomic context, marked by increased business activity and falling unemployment.”

Despite the growth in turnover in 2018, the number of companies authorised to operate in this segment decreased slightly, totalling 220 at the end of December 2018. Nearly half, or 106 companies were located in the Lisbon region, with 74 operators located in the North.

Informa added that the value of the temporary work market rose by approximately 50% between 2013 and 2018.

The National Statistics Institute of Portugal showed that in 2018, there were an average of 891,000 workers in the public and private sectors with fixed-term contracts, out of the total of more than four million employees.
