Netherlands – Deliveroo to replace employed couriers with freelancers (NL Times)

23 August 2017

Food delivery provider Deliveroo will gradually replace all of its employed couriers in the Netherlands with freelancers, reports the NL Times. According to Managing Director of Deliveroo, for Continental Europe Philip Padberg the couriers requested the change as they want to determine their own working hours as well as work for multiple clients. Furthermore, it will allow delivery drivers to keep more of their income. The planned change was first reported in May of this year. The switch to freelancers means that Deliveroo drivers will no longer be eligible for a holiday allowance, pension money or insurance pay. The move has been criticised by the Minister for Social Affairs and Employment as well as trade unions who have called on the government to put an end to the practice of ‘insecure work.’
