Netherlands –A third of workers stay with the same employer for ten years or more; younger workers in shorter flexible jobs

24 April 2018

On average, one in three Dutch employees, or 32%, work for the same employers for ten years or longer, according to data from Central Bureau of Statistics Netherlands.

The Bureau’s data, taken from 2016, also showed that 21% of Dutch workers stayed with their employer for a period between five and ten years. Meanwhile, 18% stayed between two to five years and 14% for one to two years.

Employees in public administration and government services stayed with their employer the longest. Furthermore, the government was found to be the only industry where more than half of the employees have been in employment for more than ten years. In contrast, more short-term jobs were found in the hotel and catering industry as well as in the business services sector.

Workers with shorter employment duration periods were often found to be younger and in flexible work. Older employees were found to have a longer job duration than younger employees. Over 80% of older employees (aged 55 to 65) have a job duration of five years or longer.

The data also found that almost half of the employees with a permanent contract have a job duration of ten years or longer, while over a quarter have a job with a duration of five to ten years.

Meanwhile, nearly half of the temporary jobs take less than one year and over a quarter of them take one to two years.

According to the Dutch Federation of Private Employment Agencies (ABU), the total amount of hours grew by 6% in the third period (weeks 9-12) of 2018 compared to the previous year.
