Italy’s unemployment rate improves to 7.3% in August, employment growth boosted by permanent and self-employment

Italy’s unemployment rate stood at 7.3% in August 2023, down 0.8% when compared to August 2022, according to data from National Institute of Statistics in Italy.

When compared to July, the unemployment rate fell by 0.2%.

Meanwhile, the employment rate (for persons aged 15-64) stood at 61.5% in August, up 0.1% over the month and up 1.4% over the previous year.

The total number of employed persons stood at 23.59 million, up 59,000 over the month and up 523,000 over the previous year.

By category, the number of permanent employees totalled 15.56 million, up 0.1% (10,000) over the previous month and 3.7% (550,000) over the previous year.

The number of fixed-term employees stood at 2.97 million, up 1.3% (39,000) over the previous month but down 2.4% (-74,000) over the previous year.

At the same time, the number of independent workers (self-employed) stood at 5.04 million, up 0.2% (10,000), and up 1.0% (48,000).
