According to the latest figures published by Ebitemp, the bilateral organisation for temporary employment founded by employers' associations and unions, the number of full-time temporary jobs in Italy fell by 33.3% or 102,000 units in June 2009 compared to the same month in 2008.
In a statement Ebitemp say "the latest indicators of the temporary employment market in Italy show a slowdown in the number of job losses. In June 2009 temporary jobs were down by -6.6% over the previous month. This compares to -8.9% for the period between April and May this year."
The industrial sector was hardest hit. In the metal sector temporary employment was down by 32.4%. The transport sector was down by 33% on a year-to-year basis.
Fulvio Fammoni, Confederal Secretary of the General Federation of Labour in Italy (Cgil) said "the temporary employment sector mirrors the economic crisis and the effect it is having on employment. The job losses over the 12 months in question show a very serious situation. We need to find a solution very quickly. Optimism about a slight improvement is useless. What we need is employment protection initiatives."
