Greece – Unemployment falls to 21.1% in second quarter, number of temp workers up

The jobless rate in Greece fell to 21.1% in the second quarter of 2017, down from 23.1% during the same period last year, according to figures from the Hellenic Statistical Authority. The number of temporary workers also grew compared to last year.

According to the data, the number of employed persons for the second quarter was 3.79 million, up 2.4% on the year. The number of unemployed persons was 1.01 million, down by 8.6% compared to last year. Part-time employment accounted for 9.9% of all employed persons while people in temporary work accounted for 8.3% of all employed and self-employed accounted for 22.7% of all employed persons.

The number of temporary workers in Greece during the second quarter stood at approximately 314,700, an increase from approximately 294,800 temporary workers in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, 55.5% of youth (15-19) remained unemployed. This was followed by 20-24 age group (45%).  The unemployment rate among women was 25.4% and among men 17.7%.
