Germany – Refugees are better prepared for labour market than expected

15 November 2016

Refugees who have moved to Germany over the past year are in a better than expected position to integrate into the job market, according to Frank-Jürgen Weise, director of Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees and Federal Employment Agency.

The study, performed by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and published in DW.com showed that approximately 50,000 refugees found work in Germany between September 2015 and September 2016, and about 30,000 earn enough to make them subject to social insurance contributions. The majority of the jobs are in logistics, warehousing, and agriculture. Moreover, many refugees have also become self-employed, while approximately 100,000 refugees are claiming unemployment benefits.
