Germany – Consulting firm testing a 5-hour work day, small talk is banned and phone use is limited (Business Insider)

28 October 2019

German consulting firm Rheingans Digital Enabler is allowing its employees to work five hours a day but workers could only check company emails twice a day, and meetings are typically 15 minutes or shorter. The company is also mandating that employees put their phone away and that they keep small talk to a minimum, reports the Business Insider, citing a report from the Wall Street Journal. Lasse Rheingans, the company's managing director, said he implemented a shorter workday to allow for more time with his children. The company’s 16 employees start work at 8 am and they may leave at 1 pm.  Lasse Rheingans says employees can deliver the same output during a focused 25-hour week as in 40 hours interrupted with distractions. He added that ‘happier employees deliver better work for clients, and the shorter workday is a draw, boosting recruitment in Germany’s tight labour market.’
