France – Women urged to go on strike in protest of gender pay gap

07 November 2016

Women in France are set to go on strike today at 4:34 pm (CET) as feminist group Les Glorieuses has called on working women to protest income inequality in the workplace, reports the local.fr.

It is after 4:34 pm (CET), that women will be working for free for the rest of the year due to the gender pay gap.

According to the survey published by INSEE in February 2016 (data 2013), men continue to be paid more than women, with a wage gap of 19% in all categories.

Eurostat figures show that the discrepancy in salaries between men and women in France was 15.1%.

According to a survey from Robert Half France, when asked what women can do to reduce gender inequalities at work, the first three responses given by HR Directors were:

-         Be more assertive during salary negotiations (39%)

-         Communicate more directly (39%)

-         Raise awareness of their accomplishments within the company (37%).

Then come: acquire new skills through training and professional development programs (31%), make a clearer stance for a promotion (23%) or increase their internal and external network (19%).

"In reality, there is little gender pay gap at the beginning of working life,” Noémie Cicurel, Director of Robert Half France, Temporary and OfficeTeam. “Wage differentials tend to rise or settle over time. Several reasons can be cited. For one thing, women naturally seem less offensive, they play less elbows to get a promotion and want above all to obtain merit. Furthermore, maternity leave remains an important factor in the gender pay gap as these are times when they are no longer concerned by the wages increases.”
