France – Temporary employment increases 12.4% in first quarter

Temporary employment in France recorded an increase of 12.4%, or 90,200 jobs, in Q1 2018, when compared to the same period last year, according to data from INSEE, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, temporary employment slowed down in Q1 2018, adding 4,500 jobs, a 0.5% increase which was lower than the 4.9% increase in Q4 2017. However, seasonal factors will have a strong impact on the quarter-on-quarter comparison.

Meanwhile, in terms of net payroll job creation, INSEE recorded an increase of 1.2% or 288,200 net jobs, in the first quarter of 2018 when compared to the same period last year. In the private sector there were 301,200 jobs created during the first quarter (1.6% increase) while 13,000 jobs were lost in the public sector (-0.2%).

Separately, data from Prism’Emploi recorded a 5% increase in temporary employment in April 2018 when compared to April 2017. In the first four months of 2018, temporary employment grew 7.8% when compared to the first four months of 2017.
