The number of temporary workers declined by -9.0% in June to 605,200, a reduction of 59,620 when compared to a year ago, according to the latest statistics from the French job centre Pôle Emploi.

Unskilled blue collar workers (ouvriers non qualifiés) suffered the most as they declined by -11.6% compared to June 2011; followed by white collar support staff (employés), skilled blue collar workers and professionals and managers (cadres et professions intermédiaires): -8.5%, -7.3% and -6.2%, respectively, compared with June 2011.

According to Pôle Emploi, all regions sow their population of temporary workers decline in June 2012, on a year-on-year basis. The region that saw the largest slump was Languedoc-Roussilon (-20.3%). The industrial North Eastern regions of Franche-Comté, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine dropped by -20%, -14.1% and -13.8%, respectively. In the North West, the number of temporary workers in Haute-Normandie declined by -14.2%. The regions that fared the best were Poitou-Charentes (-0.9%) and Bourgogne (-2.3%).

On a month on month basis, the Business Services sector saw its number of temporary work improve slightly by +0.4% in June 2012. Interestingly, the growth was driven the public sector as temporary employees in public administration, education, health and social care increased by +1.1%. The Industrial and Constructions sectors declined by -2.7 and -1.9%, respectively, compared with June 2011.

In July the French association of employment agencies (Prisme) also reported a declined by -8.2% in June 2012, on a year on year basis.
