12 May 2019

Temporary employment in France fell by 1.5% year over year in the first quarter, but the number of temp jobs represented a rebound compared to the fourth quarter, according to a report released Friday by INSEE, a French agency that tracks statistics.

French temporary jobs totalled 800,300 during the first quarter. While that is a decrease of 11,800 from the first quarter of 2018, it represents an increase of 12,100 when compared to the fourth quarter.

Temp jobs had fallen by 8,800 in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter.

It was a different story for permanent employment. Overall, INSEE noted total private employment in France increased by 0.9% on a year-over-year basis in the first quarter, an increase of 173,700 jobs, to a total of 19.5 million jobs.

Construction jobs rose by 1.8% year over year in the first quarter. Jobs in goods-producing industries, excluding construction, rose by 0.4% year over year.
