France – Number of temporary workers up 9% in August

At the end of August 2017, the number of temporary workers grew by 9.3% compared to the previous year, according to figures from Pôle Emploi.

At the end of August 2017, the number of temporary workers stood at 736,400, up by 62,700 from August 2016.

The industrial sector saw an increase of 5.8% in August when compared to the previous year. Meanwhile construction (11.7%) and tertiary (12.1%) also saw annual increases.

Temporary employment grew year-on-year in all regions except for the Pays de la Loire region (-1.8%). The largest year-on-year increase was seen in Brittany (16.6%).

Figures during the period also showed that 46.2% of temporary workers were under 30 years old. Compared with August 2016, temporary workers under 20 and those aged 50 or over saw their share increase (+0.5% and +0.9% respectively). The share of 20 to 24 year olds was stable while the 25 to 29 age group saw a decline of -0.8% compared to last year.

Year-on-year when compared to August 2016, the shares of middle managers and intermediate and unskilled workers fell respectively (-0.1% and -0.5%). Meanwhile, skilled workers and employees saw their shares increase (0.3% for both).
