France – New labour law gives employees the right to disconnect from office email after hours (CNN Money)

09 January 2017

A new labour law has given French workers the right to ignore business emails that arrive after work hours, reports CNN Money. The new law obliges organisations with more than 50 workers to start negotiations to define the rights of employees to ignore their smartphones.  Firms have a duty to regulate the use of emails to ensure employees get a break from the office. If management and staff cannot agree on new rules, the firm must publish a charter to define and regulate when employees should be able to switch off. French unions have long pushed for a law to ‘disconnect’ from office emails that could force employees to work outside the typical work week.
