France – Firms face fines if gender pay gaps are not erased (BBC News)

08 March 2018

French companies will have three years to close their gender pay gaps or face fines under new proposals, reports BBC News. The proposal was brought forth by Prime Minister Edouard Philippe to unions and employers. If passed by parliament, the measure will be rolled out by 2020. Men are paid on average 9% more than women in France despite equal pay laws going back 45 years. The new measure, if approved, will see special software installed on company payroll systems to monitor unjustified pay gaps. Companies which fail to address unfair pay gaps within three years of a warning could be fined up to 1% of their wage bill.
