France – Baker fined for breaking labour rules by opening business 7 days a week (BBC News)

16 March 2018

A French baker has been fined €3,000 (£2,650) for opening his business seven days a week, breaking labour rules, reports BBC News. The baker, Cédric Vaivre, who runs the only bakery in Lusigny-sur-Barse in north-east France, kept his bakery open all week during the summer to serve tourists. Vaivre is disputing the fine, while the local community and mayor are supporting him. He added that he wants the bakery to operate seven days a week in order to meet high demand from tourists. Christian Branle, Lusigny-sur-Barse's mayor, commented, “There is nothing worse than closed shops when there are tourists.” He is hoping to meet with the official from the French department of Aube who imposed the fine. France’s labour rules stipulate a day of rest during the week.
