Europe – Half of unemployed aged 20-34 ready to relocate for a job

28 March 2018

Half of unemployed people aged 20-34 in the EU are ready to transfer to another city or to another country, to secure a job, according to data from Eurostat, the statistical body of the EU.

Eurostat’s data further broke down the 50% who are ready to relocate. It showed that 21% are ready to move for a job but only in the same country, whereas 12% would consider moving to another EU Member State and 17% would be ready to move for a job outside the EU.

Education plays a role when it comes to relocation, according to Eurostat, as those with a high level of education feel more prepared to move for work (23% ready to move in the same country and 16% ready to relocate inside the EU) than young unemployed with a medium education level (20% and 11% respectively) or those with a low level of education (21% and 10%).

The majority, or 90%, of employed people aged 20-34 in the EU did not relocate for their current job. The share of those who did move to another EU Member State was 1%, while 8% moved within their country for their current job.  Of those who are employed and have a higher level of education, 13% had relocated compared with people with a medium education (6%) and those with a low level of education (4%).

Among member states, Eurostat’s data found that in seventeen member states, more than half of unemployed aged 20-34 are not ready to relocate to find work. The figure was the highest in Malta (73%) while it was lowest in Portugal.
