August US Jobs Report Softens

Services Sectors Show Strength

Mountain View, California — September 2, 2016 — A total of 151,000 jobs were added to the US economy in August, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, falling slightly below expectations following two consecutive months of stronger growth.

The job sectors leading the growth this month were Healthcare & Social Assistance (+36,100), Leisure & Hospitality (+29,000), Professional Services (excluding temporary help, +25,100) and Government (+25,000). Year-on-year total nonfarm employment rose 1.7%, while the unemployment rate rose marginally to 4.92%.  Along with Temporary Help Services, Manufacturing (-14,000), Construction (-6,000) and Natural Resources and Mining (-4,000) posted job losses this month.

Temporary help services employment declined by 0.11%, losing 3,100 jobs. The temporary penetration rate was flat at 2.02% and below its record high of 2.06% in December 2015. Year-on-year temporary help employment was up 1.2%, with monthly job gains averaging 2,800 over the past twelve months. Revisions to the temporary services sector for June, from +21,700 to +15,700, and for July, from +17,000 to +12,500, reduced previously reported gains by 10,500 jobs.

“Continued strength in the Healthcare & Social Assistance, Leisure & Hospitality and Professional Services sectors anchors this month’s job report and is a positive signal for services sectors,” said Barry Asin, President of Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA). “Taken together, the last three months of gains reflect a stabilizing labor market, and suggest that the remainder of 2016 may produce stronger jobs growth if economic conditions improve as anticipated."
