Theft at staffing firm nets prison

September 08, 2010

A former internal employee at a Virginia Beach VA staffing firm was sentenced to 56 months in prison Aug. 17 after pleading guilty April 26 to embezzling more than $250,000, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Steven Chasmar, 31, had worked at staffing firm Caliper Inc., according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In 2007, Chasmar began to make false entries into Caliper's payroll system to make it appear that temporary employees were working additional hours, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Chasmar would then access the payroll records of the temporary employees and change their banking information to his own. He then had direct deposit payments issued for the fictional hours made to his bank account. Once completed, he would restore the temporary employees' payroll records.

In addition, Chasmar allegedly had payroll checks issued to him, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. In all, Chasmar caused 216 fraudulent direct deposits into two of his bank accounts and another 119 fraudulent payroll checks issued to him for a total amount of $265,613.35, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
