What attracts blue-collar, hourly workers to a job is not what makes them stay: EmployBridge

Hourly, blue-collar workers focus on initial pay, job security and benefits when looking for a new job; however, when weighing whether to remain in a job, they focus on culture, schedule and ability to learn new skills, according to survey results released by EmployBridge.

The industrial staffing firm’s survey included responses from 18,505 hourly workers in manufacturing and logistics industries across 45 states.

Other findings in the report included:

  • More than a quarter of hourly workers are actively pursuing new jobs; another 30% would consider a new job if the opportunity presented itself.
  • National average pay rates for EmployBridge’s logistics and manufacturing workers rose to $13.87 this year from $12.45 in 2017.
  • What would it take for a worker to take a less desirable shift? The survey found that a shift differential of $1.30 per hour would motivate 72% of respondents to work a second- or third-shift job.
  • Only 14% of workers prefer 12-hour shifts.
  • 90% of workers were interested in apprenticeships.

The survey took place from Feb. 11 to March 22.
