US is largest global market for IT staffing followed by Japan and UK

The US ranks as the largest global market for temporary IT staffing by far, according to the SIA’s Global IT Staffing Market Sizes and Competitive Landscape 2023 report released Dec. 14.

US temporary IT staffing revenue was estimated at $42.5 billion in 2022. The second-largest market was Japan with $8.1 billion in revenue. The UK followed as third largest with $6.9 billion.

The three countries represented 67% of the global IT temporary staffing market’s $86 billion in revenue in 2022.

IT staffing makes up a larger share of the total temp staffing market in the Americas than it does in Europe and Asia Pacific, the report noted. However, IT revenue represents just 21% of the total temp staffing revenue in the Americas; healthcare staffing represents 32% and commercial staffing represents 30%. The Americas includes Canada and Latin America.

And while the US ranks as the largest staffing market in the world, Texas represents the largest market within the US with IT staffing revenue of $5.06 billion, or 12% of the market. Here are the top five states in terms of spend on IT staffing:

  1. Texas, $5.06 billion in revenue, 12% of market
  2. California, $4.50 billion in revenue, 11% of market
  3. Illinois, $3.64 billion in revenue, 9% of market
  4. Georgia, $2.08 billion in revenue, 5% of market
  5. Pennsylvania, $1.85 billion in revenue, 4% of market

While the states above lead in terms of total revenue, Hawaii ranked No. 1 in terms of IT staffing revenue as a percent of total staffing revenue within the state. IT staffing represented 38% of total staffing revenue in Hawaii. The Aloha state was followed by Maryland at 36% and Virginia at 35%.
