Tech diversity advocate Stacy Brown-Philpot leaving TaskRabbit

TaskRabbit Inc. CEO Stacy Brown-Philpot is leaving the San Francisco-based online staffing firm on Aug. 31.

Brown-Philpot, one of the few female Black CEOs in Silicon Valley, announced the news in a blog post. She joined TaskRabbit in 2013 and took over as CEO in 2016. TaskRabbit is included int SIA's report, The Gig Economy and Human Cloud Landscape: 2019 Update.

“As strange as it may seem, the unique and difficult circumstances of the last few months have served to instill confidence that TaskRabbit will not only succeed, but thrive without me,” Brown-Philpot wrote. “The team has risen to the challenges of adapting the business to a worldwide pandemic, working from home, and now are rallying around each other to address issues of racial injustice in ways that are both inspiring and humbling.”

TaskRabbit’s board of directors is conducting a search for a new CEO, the company said in a statement to SIA. “Under her leadership, TaskRabbit has become a successful global business that is strongly positioned for continued year-over-year growth.”

Brown-Philpot noted that there have been “extensive discussions” about her replacement and the importance of diverse and inclusive leadership. “They are interviewing a number of highly qualified candidates from outside TaskRabbit, and I know they’ll find the right person for the job,” she wrote.

Her future plans have not been disclosed, but prior to joining TaskRabbit, Brown-Philpot spent nearly a decade at Google heading online sales and operations. She sits on the board of directors for HP Inc., Nordstrom and Black Girls Code. She is also a founding member of SoftBank’s $100 million Opportunity Fund that exclusively funds businesses led by Black Americans and people of color.

Home furnishing retailer IKEA Group acquired TaskRabbit in 2017.
