Walmart reaches hiring goal of 150,000 associates, but will now hire 50,000 more

April 20, 2020

Walmart reported Friday it has reached its announced goal of hiring more than 150,000 new associates and now plans to hire an additional 50,000 associates to meet increased demand amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The company had planned to have the initial 150,000 hired by May but met the goal early. The company had more than 1 million applicants and hired an average of 5,000 people per day.

Plans call for the 50,000 new hires to primarily be temporary associates. They will work across the company’s stores, clubs, and fulfillment and distribution centers.

Walmart has worked with more than 70 companies that have furloughed workers to find the new associates. Some of the temporary hires are expected to return to their previous firms but others will convert to permanent roles at Walmart.

The company is using an expedited hiring process that can result in an offer in as little as 24 hours after a person applies for work.
