“The message I’d like to get out is it’s a greedy grab by them,” Jacqueline Windh, a freelance writer from Vancouver Island, Canada, told Forbes regarding Upwork’s decision to raise the fees some freelancers pay to find work through the online staffing provider.

“What we’ve done is change one-size-fits-all pricing to a more custom approach,” Upwork CEO Stephane Kasriel said in an emailed comment to Forbes. “This is a change and people are voicing their opinions, but we’re confident that our new pricing model is the right decision for Upwork’s community overall.”

Upwork is changing its freelancer pricing format from a flat fee to a sliding scale and will begin charging clients a processing fee.
