Gig economy, online platform workers are making inroads in organizing themselves, according to information from the International Labour Organization. They have seen success in some countries, but in others anti-competition laws that cover independent contractors have hampered organization efforts. “Despite the portrayal of many platforms as modern, innovative and cutting-edge ‘disruptors,’ when the question of collective bargaining is raised in connection with the gig economy, antiquated stereotypes tend to dominate,” according to an online post by the ILO. “In light of its institutional flexibility and adaptability, collective bargaining provides the best way to ensure that conditions of work balance the needs of both workers and firms.”
