Uber’s COO and CMO to step down

June 10, 2019

Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) reported Chief Operating Officer Barney Harford and Chief Marketing Officer Rebecca Messina will leave the company, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday. The human cloud, ride-sharing firm said Andrew Macdonald has been promoted to senior VP, global, rides, and will oversee teams that manage the global rides business, community operations, safety and insurance, and Uber for Business.

Both Macdonald and Jason Droege, who leads Uber Eats, will report directly to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

The New York Times reported the move gives tighter control to Khosrowshahi. It also reported that employees complained Harford had made insensitive comments about race.

Harford will remain at the San Francisco-based company until July to help with the transition. He had served as COO since January 2018 and was a senior advisor to the CEO from October 2017 to December 2017. He was CEO of online travel company Orbitz Worldwide from January 2009 to November 2015.

Uber also announced Jill Hazelbaker, who currently oversees policy and communications, will assume responsibility for the company’s marketing functions. Hazelbaker joined Uber in November 2015. She was formerly VP, communications and public policy, at Snap Inc. from October 2014 to October 2015.
