Uber names Expedia exec as CEO

August 28, 2017

Human cloud, ride-sharing firm Uber Technologies Inc. will appoint Dara Khosrowshahi, president and CEO of Expedia Inc., as its new CEO, according to media reports. Uber’s board voted on the appointment on Sunday; Recode was the first news outlet to report the news.

Khosrowshahi replaces Travis Kalanick, who stepped down from the role in June but remains on the board of directors. A number of other Uber executives recently left the firm, including its president.

Expedia Chairman Barry Diller sent the following note to all Expedia employees:

“As you probably know by now, Dara Khosrowshahi has been asked to lead Uber. Nothing has been yet finalized, but having extensively discussed this with Dara I believe it is his intention to accept. I also know the struggle he has been having out of both his abiding enthusiasm for Expedia’s future as well as his loyalty to all of us. I know Dara would like to communicate now with all of you but I’ve asked him not to until this is fully resolved. If Dara does leave us, it will be to my great regret but also my blessing – he’s devoted 12 great years to building this company and if this is what he wants for his next adventure it will be with my best wishes. I say that because he deserves nothing less and I say that also because he will leave behind a tremendously talented corps of executives.”

Bloomberg describes Khosrowshahi as a “deal-maker” and “Trump agitator” and reports he inherits a litany of problems that include internal feuding and business challenges.

Despite the distractions, Uber last week reported it generated $1.75 billion in adjusted net revenue in the second quarter of this year and its net loss narrowed.

Dara Khosrowshahi has been CEO of Expedia since 2005 and a member of its board since completion of Expedia’s spin-off from IAC/InterActiveCorp in August 2015. He also served for a period as president of the Brand Expedia business.

Prior to the IAC/Expedia spin-off, Khosrowshahi was CEO of IAC Travel, a division of IAC, where he helped expand IAC’s portfolio of travel brands, which now comprise Expedia. Before that, he had held a series of executive roles at IAC, including executive VP and CFO; executive VP of operations and strategic planning; and president of USA Networks Interactive, a division of IAC.

Prior to joining IAC, Khosrowshahi worked at Allen & Company LLC from 1991 to 1998, where he served as VP from 1995 to 1998.

Khosrowshahi is currently a member of the boards of directors of Fanatics Inc. and The New York Times Company, and of the supervisory board of trivago, NV, a majority-owned subsidiary of Expedia.
