The attorney known for launching class-action lawsuits against Uber Technologies Inc. and other human cloud platform firms over the issue of worker misclassification, Shannon Liss-Riordan, announced Monday that she is running for US Senate to represent Massachusetts.

“This country is stuck because of Washington politics, this country needs a fresh voice willing to break that cycle,” Liss-Riordan said in a two-minute video posted on Twitter.

Liss-Riordan will face incumbent Sen. Ed Markey in the 2020 Democratic primary. Markey was elected to the US Senate 2013, but has represented Massachusetts since 1976 when he began serving as a US representative, WBUR reported.

Uber agreed to pay $20 million to settle a lawsuit by drivers in California and Massachusetts who claim they were misclassified as independent contractors, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Liss-Riordan served as attorney for the drivers.

The company also said 60,000 drivers have or may file claims in arbitration as they agreed to hear their cases outside of court by independent arbitration.
