Uber and Lyft begin campaign against California IC bill (Los Angeles Times)

June 13, 2019

Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) and Lyft Inc. (NASDAQ: LYFT) launched a public campaign to exempt the human cloud, ride-sharing firms from a California law that could classify drivers as employees instead of independent contractors, the Los Angeles Times reported. “A change to the employment classification of ride-share drivers would pose a risk to our businesses,” the companies wrote. Their move comes after the state Assembly last month approved Assembly Bill 5, which would codify a 2018 court decision to use the more-strict ABC test for determining independent contractor compliance.
