US weathers government shutdown, adds 213,000 private-sector jobs: ADP

January 30, 2019

Private-sector employment rose by 213,000 during January in the US, according to the ADP National Employment Report released today.

“The job market weathered the government shutdown well. Despite the severe disruptions, businesses continued to add aggressively to their payrolls,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, which produces the report in collaboration with ADP. “As long as businesses hire strongly the economic expansion will continue on.”

Midsize business led the way, adding 84,000 jobs. Large businesses added 66,000, and small businesses added 63,000.

Looking at job growth by sector, the goods-producing sector added 68,000 jobs despite a decline of 1,000 in natural resources/mining. Construction, part of the goods-producing sector, added 35,000 jobs while manufacturing added 33,000.

“The labor market has continued its pattern of strong growth with little sign of a slowdown in sight,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute. “We saw significant growth in nearly all industries, with manufacturing adding the most jobs in more than four years. Midsized businesses continue to lead job-creation, however the share of jobs was spread a bit more evenly across all company sizes this month.”

Service-providing sector employers added 145,000 jobs in January with professional/business services leading the way with 46,000 positions. Other top sectors included healthcare/social assistance, which added 37,000 jobs, and leisure/hospitality, which added 31,000.
