US nonmanufacturing activity index accelerates in August but hurricane could sap some strength

September 06, 2017

Economic activity in the US nonmanufacturing sector expanded in August at a faster rate than in July, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing index, released today. ISM’s nonmanufacturing index rose in August to a reading of 55.3 from July’s reading of 53.9, which was the weakest pace in almost a year.

August’s reading represents continued growth in the nonmanufacturing sector at a faster rate. Any reading above 50% generally indicates improving conditions.

Reuters reported the US services sector activity accelerated in August amid strong gains in new orders and employment, suggesting that a slowdown in job growth last month was probably temporary. Economists, however, cautioned that Hurricane Harvey, which devastated parts of Texas, could sap some of the strength.
