January 07, 2019

Economic activity in the US nonmanufacturing sector decelerated in December, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing index, released today.

ISM’s nonmanufacturing index fell to a reading of 57.6 in December, down from a reading of 60.7 in November.

Readings above 50 generally indicate improving conditions.

The employment portion of the index decreased in December to a reading of 56.3 from November’s reading of 58.4. Thirteen industries reported increased employment, and four industries — mining; real estate, rental and leasing; management of companies and support services; and wholesale trade — reported decreased employment.
