US gains tech jobs in May even as tech-sector firms shed positions: CompTIA

June 05, 2023

The US economy added a net 45,000 technology jobs in May even as tech-sector companies themselves shed 4,725 jobs, according to CompTIA’s analysis of data from the US Bureau of Statistics. CompTIA also noted job postings for tech hiring eased, though they still totaled nearly 234,000.

Top positions companies are looking to hire include software developers and engineers, IT project managers, data analysts and IT support specialists. In addition, about one in five job postings are for positions in emerging technologies or jobs requiring emerging tech skills, including nearly 15,000 openings involved with artificial intelligence.

“Reassuringly, the positives for the month outweigh the negatives, confirming the tech workforce remains on solid footing,” said Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA.

The analysis noted tech companies reduced headcount by 4,725 jobs in May, representing less than 0.1% of the industry’s total workforce.
