Three quarters of 2018 grads have no jobs lined up: Monster survey

May 09, 2018

This year’s graduating class is still very deep in the weeds of job searching, according to a Monster.com survey of 353 students graduating this year. So far, few grads in the class of 2018 have a job lined up for after graduation, and while most report being hopeful they’ll have a job by the time they collect their degree, many are only just starting to look.

Among the findings of Monster’s survey:

  • Three out of four do not have a job lined up post-graduation.
  • While 30% of students started looking for a job more than a year ago, more than one third, 36.5%, are either just starting their job search or are waiting until after finals/graduation.
  • When asked about their résumé, 27.5% of grads responded with the shrug emoji to show how they feel about their current résumé and 36.8% are worried that it isn’t good enough.

While their biggest fear is that their résumé isn’t good enough, 2018 graduates are also worried that:

  • They won’t be able to find what they’re looking for: 36.5%
  • They’ll bomb the interviews: 32.9%
  • They don’t know what job they want: 31.7%
  • They don’t have the right network: 31.7%

Women are most concerned that they won’t be able to find the job they want, at 42.6%, while men are equally concerned that their résumé isn’t good enough and they don’t know what they’re looking for, 34.3%.
