Temp staffing hours fall 5% in week ended Jan. 21, suggests some pullback in industry

January 31, 2023

Temporary staffing hours worked fell 5.0% year over year in the week ended Jan. 21, but they were up 3.7% from the previous week, according to the SIA | Bullhorn Staffing Indicator released today.

This week’s report found commercial staffing hours fell 5% and professional staffing hours fell 6% on a year-over-year basis. However, on a week-over-week sequential basis, commercial temporary staffing hours rose 4.1% and professional temporary staffing hours increased 2.6%.

“The year-over-year decline in staffing hours worked is roughly in line with the decline in temporary help employment measured for December as reported in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ January US Jobs Report (published on Jan. 6) and suggests some degree of pullback in the overall volume of the US staffing industry,” the report states. “Such a pullback is not surprising given the record volume levels achieved in some segments of staffing in 2022 and in the face of current headwinds such as inflation, elevated interest rates and general economic slowing.”
