Temp agency audits decline by 80%, agency’s documents show (The Star)

March 11, 2019

Ontario’s workers’ compensation board conducted 85 audits of temporary help agencies last year, down from 454 in 2016, The Star newspaper reported. The 80% decline is part of an overall drop in the number of compliance checks conducted by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, according to the documents obtained through a Freedom of Information request; such inspections fell by almost 50% since 2016. The audits check to ensure employers are accurately reporting workplace injuries and paying insurance premiums. The audits also check for whether employees have been misclassified as independent contractors, who are generally not covered by the WSIB.
