Tech, retail and media sectors see highest turnover rates, LinkedIn research finds

The tech, retail, and media sectors are seeing the highest turnover rates, while the average turnover rate for all companies around the world is 10.9%, according to LinkedIn Talent Solutions’ new analysis of more than half a billion LinkedIn member profiles.

The report lists the roles, industries and sectors experiencing the highest turnover rates, worldwide.

In 2017, the tech software sector saw the highest talent turnover rate at 13.2%, followed by retail and consumer products at 13.0%. The media and entertainment sector and professional services both came in at 11.4%.

This is the first time in three years that tech took the “top” spot in terms of highest turnover rate.

Employees in the retail and consumer sector are turning over at high rates, with industries such as restaurants, retail and sporting goods experiencing the most attrition.

Within media and entertainment, newspapers, online media and sports are neck-and-neck in terms of what industries are driving the turnover rates.

The sectors seeing the most talent turnover:

  1. Technology (software): 13.2%
  2. Retail and consumer products: 13.0%
  3. Media and entertainment: 11.4%
  4. Professional services: 11.4%
  5. Government/education/nonprofit: 11.2%
  6. Financial services and insurance: 10.8%
  7. Telecommunications: 10.8%
  8. Oil and energy: 9.7%
  9. Aero/auto/transport: 9.6%
  10. Healthcare and pharmaceutical: 9.4%
