Survey: IT Training ‘Fair or Poor’

September 16, 2011

More than a third of information technology leaders rate their IT organization’s training program’s effectiveness as fair or poor, according to a quarterly survey by TEKsystems, a Hanover, Md.-based technology staffing and services company.

According to the survey, 35 percent of IT leaders think their training programs are fair or poor. Meanwhile, 46 percent rate their reinforcement plans as fair or poor; 42 percent say the same of their accountability mechanisms.

“For training to be considered effective, reinforcement plans and accountability to using newly acquired skills are essential,” said Rachel Russell, TEKsystems’ director. “These structures not only enable IT professionals to master what they learned, but also, they show the workforce that an organization is serious about applying new IT skills to advance the business.”

While IT managers (60 percent) or IT directors (51 percent) are most often responsible for developing training programs, 28 percent of IT leaders say that IT employees should be responsible and share ownership for prioritizing which training programs are most relevant for them.

Nearly 3,000 IT leaders from companies of all sizes and industries participated in the survey.
