Supreme Court rules nonunion public employees don’t have to pay unions (Chicago Tribune)

June 27, 2018

The US Supreme Court ruled today in a 5-4 decision that public-sector unions could not require nonunion public employees to pay “fair share fees,” the Chicago Tribune reported. The fees were approved by a case in 1977 and cover the cost of collective bargaining conducted for workers by the union but are meant to exclude any political advocacy costs by the union. The Chicago Tribune reported the decision deals a serious blow to organized labor.
