Staffing Industry Analysts lists largest US staffing firms for 2017

July 19, 2017

Staffing Industry Analysts released its annual list of largest US staffing firms, which included 144 firms with US staffing revenue of more than $100 million in 2016.

Sixteen firms qualified for this year’s report that did not appear in last year’s report.

“This report showcases those companies that have grown their business to the top of the industry in terms of revenue and growth,” Staffing Industry Analysts President Barry Asin said. “The 144 companies comprising the list generated a combined revenue of $80.0 billion in 2016 and their success illustrates the continued growth and adoption of staffing in the US.”

The five largest firms in the US are:

  1. Allegis Group, $8.93 billion, 6.5% market share
  2. Randstad Holding: $4.67 billion, 3.4% market share
  3. Adecco: $4.60 billion, 3.4% market share
  4. Robert Half International Inc.: $3.55 billion, 2.6% market share
  5. Kelly Services Inc.: $3.40 billion, 2.5% market share

Maryland-based Allegis Group topped the list for the 10th consecutive year; Randstad Holding moved up one spot this year to rank second on the list, swapping positions with Adecco. Robert Half International moved from fifth to fourth, and Kelly Services regained footing in the top five.

“This report showcases the continuing success of many types of staffing firms in the US, each with their own strategic niche,” said Timothy Landhuis, research manager for Staffing Industry Analysts. “A particularly bright spot in 2016 was the impressive growth among healthcare staffing firms, consistent with the trends we have been reporting in our research. This year’s report includes 26 healthcare-focused staffing firms, up from 20 firms in last year’s report and 17 firms two years ago. We also note that among the top 20 largest on our list, four firms are healthcare staffing firms.”

Industrial and IT skill segments were the largest temporary staffing skill segments by revenue for 45 and 43 companies respectively this year.

This year’s report defines “staffing revenue” as revenue related to temporary staffing, direct hire/permanent placement, retained search, and temp-to-hire conversion fees.
