Employment in South Africa got a boost in August as more than 90,000 additional temporary and contractor workers were put to use during a countrywide public service strike, according to Adcorp, a South Africa-based staffing firm.
"Most of these workers (62.5%) were employed through temporary employment agencies rather than directly," said Adcorp CEO Richard Pike.
The Adcorp employment index, which measures employment trends in South Africa, posted its first increase in five months in August, rising at an annual rate of 6.8% in August -- it had fallen by 8.1% in July. However, the permanent employment portion of the index fell at an annual rate of 2.4% -- its 18th consecutive monthly decline.
Adcorp ranks No. 40 on Staffing Industry Analysts' 2010 list of largest global staffing firms.
