Ruling over Uber and Lyft IC classification could come within days (TechCrunch)

August 07, 2020

A California judge could rule in a matter of days whether Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) and Lyft Inc. (NASAQ: LYFT) must reclassify their drivers as employees rather than independent contractors, TechCrunch reported on Thursday. The decision would come from a lawsuit filed by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra that argues drivers must be employees under the state’s AB 5 law that aims to get tough on independent contractor misclassification. However, Uber and Lyft are supporting a ballot measure on the November ballot that would allow drivers to remain independent contractors. The companies also faced another independent contractor lawsuit this week by the California Labor Commissioner.
