Pulse staffing revenue data flat in June

August 01, 2016

US temporary staffing revenue was flat year over year in June, according to data collected for the latest Pulse Survey report by Staffing Industry Analysts. Revenue had risen 5% year over year in May.

“Clearly June was a weaker month for temporary staffing as a whole, with 0% median year-over-year revenue growth, the lowest observed since January 2010,” said Research Associate Sree Thiyagarajan. “While healthcare staffing continued to be the most promising segment, half of the skill segments reported deceleration in median revenue growth, with office/clerical, industrial, finance/accounting, and engineering/design dropping into negative territory.”

In another bearish sign, sales difficulty also increased to 2.68 (on a five-point scale with five meaning more difficult) and average recruiting difficulty decreased. However, the proportion of firms reporting an increasing trend in new orders bounced back to 43% in June from 22% in May.

The report found median year-over-year revenue growth decelerated in the following staffing segments in June from May:

  • Office/clerical: To -5% from 2% growth
  • Industrial: To -5% from -1%
  • Locum tenens: To 19% from 33%
  • Finance/accounting: To -3% from 0%
  • Engineering/design: To -5% from -3%

The report also found median year-over-year revenue growth accelerated in the following staffing segments in June from May:

  • Travel nursing; To 33% from 25%
  • Per diem nursing: 15% from 11%
  • Allied healthcare: To 16% from 6%
  • Marketing/creative: To 3% from 1%

Median growth rate in IT staffing was unchanged in June at 6%, the same as in May.

Pulse Survey results are based on a monthly survey of US staffing firms. Data from the month of June was submitted by individuals from 112 staffing companies.
