Professionals split on whether employers should require college degrees

May 27, 2021

Most professionals surveyed by Korn Ferry (NYSE: KFY) believe it’s more important today to earn a college degree, but they are split on whether degrees should be mandatory.

The survey found that just 50% of professionals say employers should require candidates to have a college degree; however, 68% say it is more critical to have a college degree today than when they first entered the workforce.

“We do see a trend with some companies — particularly in the higher growth technology sectors — doing away with mandatory bachelor’s degrees,” said Ken Kring, co-managing director of Korn Ferry’s global education practice. “There are many roles for which technical two-year degrees or on-the-job training are sufficient to be qualified.”

In addition, 41% of respondents say having a two-year associate’s degree instead of a four-year bachelor’s degree does not limit career prospects for most.

It also found that 70% say a college degree obtained from an online learning institution holds less value than an in-person degree.

The survey took place in May and included 760 professionals.
