May 31, 2017

US online job ads rose by 195,600 in May to approximately 4.81 million, according to The Conference Board’s report on online job ads.

Healthcare practitioners and technical ads posted the largest gain, rising by 46,400 to a total of 642,400, followed by sales and related ads, which rose by 31,800 to 489,500.

Installation, maintenance and repair posted the smallest gain, up by 1,200, followed by food preparation and serving-related ads, with a gain of 1,800.

The Conference Board reported the data series has experienced a declining trend in the number of online job ads that may not reflect broader trends in the US labor market. Based on changes in how job postings appear online, The Conference Board is reviewing its methodology to ensure accuracy and alignment with market trends.

Separately, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area in Colorado posted the lowest unemployment rates in April, 2.1%, among US metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more. The Cleveland-Elyria area in Ohio posted the highest jobless rate among the large areas in April at 5.4%. Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, Ames, Iowa, and Boulder, Colo., posted the lowest unemployment rates, at 1.7% and 1.8%, respectively.
