Online job ads fall in March

March 30, 2016

US online job ads edged down by 31,519 in March to approximately 5.13 million, according to The Conference Board’s report on online job ads.

“The last three quarters of revised data for 2015 were essentially flat, with the first quarter of 2016 showing a loss of 137,000,” said Gad Levanon, chief economist, North America, at The Conference Board. “For about the past year, employer demand has been in a hold pattern, but the most recent quarter’s data indicates some additional weakness in demand.”

In March, five of the 10 largest online job categories posted decreases.

Healthcare practitioners and technical ads posted the largest loss, down by 39,200 to a total of 614,200, followed by transportation and material moving ads, which fell by 19,000 to 389,700.

Sales and related ads posted the largest gain, up by 10,200, followed by food preparation and serving related with a gain of 8,300 ads.

March 2016 results incorporate an annual revision. This year’s annual revision includes updates to the job board coverage, a revision of the historical data from September 2014 forward, and the annual update of the seasonal adjustment factors.
