Online job ads edge up in September, but The Conference Board is reviewing employment measure

October 04, 2017

US online job ads rose by 2,500 in September to more than 4.48 million, according to The Conference Board’s report on online job ads released today. However, the organization noted there has been a declining trend in the number of online job ads that may not reflect the broader trend in the US labor market.

“Based on changes in how job postings appear online, The Conference Board is reviewing its [help wanted online jobs] methodology to ensure accuracy and alignment with market trends," the organization stated.

Using data from the current measure, only four of the largest 10 online occupational categories posted increases in September. Most states and metropolitan statistical areas are relatively flat; among the largest states, 11 increased, eight decreased and one remained constant.

Management ads posted the largest loss, down by 27,200 to a total of 371,800. Business and financial operations ads followed, falling by 16,100 to a total of 265,500.

“Sales and related” ads posted the largest gain, up by 16,900, followed by “office and administrative support” ads, with a gain of 13,200.
